Athletic Highlights: February 26-March 5, 2018
Men's Basketball: Austin Gilyard and Nassyr Daniel were named to the South Atlantic Conference All-Freshman team this past week. Gilyard averaged 11.5 points per game and led the conference in free throw percentage, shooting 88.6 percent from behind the line. Daniel averaged 8.9 points per game and led the team with 35 blocks and third in the league with 1.7 blocks per game.
Baseball: The Lions went 1-2-1 this week. On Monday, due to darkness, the contest against Lake Erie was called after the 10th inning with both teams knotted at 14 apiece. Saturday saw the Lions split with Newberry, dropping game one 11-6, but rebounding in game two with a 3-2 victory. Trailing 12-1 entering the bottom of the fifth inning, the Lions roared back to score nine runs, but ultimately could not complete the comeback, falling to the Wolves 12-10 on Sunday. In the win on Saturday, Jared Mathewson threw a complete game scattering five hits and allowing just two runs to pick up his first win (1-0) of the season. He struck out nine batters and walked only two. Daniel Vitello went 1-for-2 at the plate with a double, a stolen base and a run scored to lead the Lions offensively. Christian Stampler followed with a two run homerun in the win.
Softball: Mars Hill went a perfect 4-0 this weekend, picking up two victories over Converse on Saturday and wins over West Virginia Tech and Montreat on Sunday. Mars Hill downed Converse 5-2 and 8-4, respectively. On a wild pitch in the bottom of the seventh, the Lions completed their comeback against West Virginia Tech to win 3-2. Leading 3-2 entering the top of the seventh inning against the Cavaliers, the Lions blew the lead open, scoring 10 runs come away with the 13-2 victory. Bobbi Jones drove in six runs off of two doubles and two homeruns this weekend, hitting over .600 in her two appearances. Casey Stanek earned three of the four victories with Christiana Marasa figuring in on the first game versus the Valkyries Saturday afternoon.
Men's Golf: Mars Hill's A Team won the Mars Hill Spring Invitational held at Broadmoor Golf Links with Harry Butler as the top overall finisher.
Women's Golf: Mars Hill finished third in the Mars Hill Spring Invitational. Janie Gooch was the top finisher for the Lions, placing sixth overall. Emilee Wenmoth recorded an eighth place finish.
Women's Lacrosse: The Lions lost to Concordia-St. Paul, 18-3, on Wednesday night. Olivia Hokanson had two goals and Molly Tobias had a goal and an assist.
Men's Lacrosse: Mars Hill fell to Young Harris on Saturday evening by a score of 12-3. Dima Ferreira had a goal and an assist. Ferreira was named South Atlantic Conference Men's Lacrosse Player of the Week at the beginning of the week.
