Athletic Highlights: October 22– October 29, 2017
Football: Mars Hill was idle last week. They will host UNC Pembroke in a non-conference matchup this week. David Salmon leads the SAC in passing yards per game (295.3) and is second in the SAC in passing touchdowns (17). Keshaun Taylor leads the SAC in receiving yards per game (135.4) while Craig Rucker is fourth (88.1) in that category. Taylor is second in the league in receiving touchdowns (8). As a team, MHU leads the SAC in passing yards, passing yards per game, passing touchdowns and total offense. Mars Hill will recognize their senior players prior to kick off on Saturday.
Men's Soccer: The Lions hosted Senior Day against Anderson on Saturday, October 28 where they honored Ben Lucas, Kyle Dix and Stian Sanner. Mars Hill dropped the game 2-1 with the lone goal scored by Joakim Lien. The loss, combined with a Lincoln Memorial 4-1 win over Catawba, pushed the Lions down to fifth in the SAC. They ended the regular season with a 5-7-2 (4-4-2 SAC) record and face Lincoln Memorial on the road on Tuesday, October 31 in quarterfinal action. The Lions won the previous match, 1-0, and have not been defeated in Harrogate, Tennessee in their last four visits.
Women's Soccer: The Lions defeated Barton College, 1-0, on Wednesday, October 25. Julia Johnson's first goal of the year snapped a six-game losing streak. Mars Hill fell 3-0 to Anderson in the regular season finale on Saturday, October 28 at the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium. The Lions honored seniors Kaitlyn Danglemaier, Juanita Guzman, Aleonya Hunter, Ashley Martian and Breona Tate for Senior Day. Mars Hill finished the season with a 3-12-1 (1-9 SAC) record.
Men's Swimming: The Lions came away with dominant performances over Union (Ky.) and Urbana on Saturday, October 28. Mars Hill easily defeated Union College 155-103. They dominated Urbana University, taking the meet 192-10. Erwin Ortiz won three individual events and Angel Regalado won two. They, along with teammates Brendon Cyprianos and Vitor Goncalves won the 200 Yard Freestyle and Medley relays.
Women's Swimming: The Mars Hill women's swimming team handily defeated Union (Ky.) and Urbana on Saturday, October 28. Mars Hill toppled Urbana 194-43 and rolled past Union, 176-63. Abby Harty won three individual events while Haley Horton claimed top spot in two. They, along with Kathryn Boland and Rachel Nichols, won the 200 Yard Medley relay. The women remain undefeated on the season.
Women's Golf: The Lions finished in last place at the Flagler Fall Slam in St. Augustine, Florida. Janie Gooch was the top finished for the Lions in 81st place. Marie Syvertsen followed in 86th.
Volleyball: Mars Hill went 1-2 in three SAC contests this past week. The victory came against Tusculum at home on Tuesday, October 24. In the 3-1 win, Lauren Hochstetler collected her 1,000th career kill. The Lions would travel to Queens and Wingate on Friday and Saturday, respectively. They dropped both games by scores of 3-1 with Hochstetler leading the way in kills. She now has the team lead with 196, followed by the 188 of Maddie Spurgeon.
2017 Hall of Fame Inductees: Mars Hill University will induct three new members into the Athletics Hall of Fame on November 4, 2017. The three members will include Nichole Gilstrap Criminger (Volleyball), Terrance Stokes (Football) and Daniel Waymont (Men's Soccer). Click here to read the full release...
