Athletic Highlights: February 19-February 26, 2018
Women's Basketball: The Lions dropped their final two games of the year to Newberry and Catawba, respectively. In the 52-44 loss to the Wolves, Mariah Johnson accounted for half of the Lions points, scoring 22, collecting six rebounds and adding five assists. Against Catawba, Johnson led the team once again with 19 points, followed by a returning Shayla Smith's 14 points. Mars Hill ended the season with a 2-26 (1-19 SAC) record.
Men's Basketball: Mars Hill fell in their final games of the year, losing to Newberry and Catawba. The Lions put up a fight against the Wolves, but ultimately lost 99-93. Austin Gilyard led Mars Hill with 20 points. On Senior Day, Bennett Wilson put on a memorable performance, scoring a career-high 35 points in the 103-94 loss. Fellow seniors Luke Van-Rijn, Cody Hylton and Brandon Watkins added 14, 10 and 13 points, respectively. The Lions end the season with a 4-24 (1-19 SAC) record.
Baseball: The Lions went 3-2 during the week, picking up victories over Montreat, Northwood and a win in the third game of the series with SAC rival Tusculum. Matt Honeycutt had four RBI in the 9-7 victory over Montreat. The Mars Hill bats came alive against Northwood, clobbering four homeruns off the bats of Travis Owens, Christian Stampler, Lance Edwards and Cody Cline. In a thriller, Mars Hill scored six unanswered runs to down the Pioneers 6-5 on Saturday.
Softball: The Lions split action at the FMU Winter Wrangle this weekend, losing both contests to UVa-Wise, but downing host Francis Marion on Saturday and Sunday. Mars Hill lost 10-1 and 6-5, respectively, to the Cavaliers, but bounced back with 10-6 and 2-0 wins over the Patriots. Ragan Broome and Ashley Evans each had three RBI on Saturday. Broome had another three RBI on Sunday in the loss to UVa-Wise.
Men's Tennis: The Mars Hill men's tennis team was defeated by Newberry in their SAC opener, 7-2. Pedro Pinassi earned the lone singles victory and, along with Kyrel Trim, earned a Mars Hill double's victory.
Women's Tennis: Mars Hill was swept 9-0 by Newberry to open up SAC play on Friday.
Men's Golf: Mars Hill placed 18th in the Newberry Spring Invitational. Harry Butler was the top finisher for Mars Hill, placing 36th overall.
Women's Lacrosse: The Lions fell to Barton, 12-8, on Friday afternoon. Olivia Hokanson scored four goals, followed by Kiersten Foust's three. Taylor Burgess added a goal as well.
Men's Lacrosse: Mars Hill went 1-1 this past week, losing to Colorado Mesa 17-9, but responding on Saturday with a 17-6 victory over Shorter. Parker Beaudry scored three goals and added an assist in the contest with Colorado Mesa. Dima Ferreira had six points (3g, 3a) in the win over Shorter.
