Baseball Sweeps Winston-Salem State
Mars Hill’s baseball team swept a double-header from Winston-Salem State to win the three-game series over the Rams

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Mars Hill's baseball team swept a double-header from Winston-Salem State to win the three-game series over the Rams. The Lions won the first game 2-0 and then won the nightcap, 5-3. MHU improved to 8-2 on the season while the Rams fell to 2-5 overall.
Game 1: Mars Hill 2, WSSU 0
Hunter Boydston and Drayden Williams combined for the shutout in game one. Boydston threw five innings scattering five hits with one strikeout while Williams pitched the final two innings allowing just one hit. He also struck out one batter. Dylan Powers, Lance Edwards and Hunter Merrill had one hit apiece to pace the Lions at the plate. Powers added an RBI.
After Evan Rogers walked to lead off the game, he stole second base and was moved to third base by a fly ball hit by Powers. Rogers then stole home to give the Lions a 1-0 lead.
Powers hit a solo homerun to lead off the sixth inning and seal the win for the Lions behind a great pitching effort from Boydston and Williams.
Game 2: Mars Hill 5, WSSU 3
The Lions won the second contest 5-3 to win the three-game series against the Rams. Rogers led MHU at the plate going 2-4 with a pair of runs scored. Rayshelon Carolina went 1-3 with two runs scored, a RBI and a triple. Logan Conley also went 1-3 with a run scored and a RBI. Tom Mastrodonato obtained the win on the mound throwing four innings allowing just one hit while striking out four batters. Mastrodonato did not allow a run.
The Lions scored three runs in their first at-bat on four hits and two Ram miscues. Powers singled up the middle to plate Rogers and then Conley singled to left field to drive in Carolina. Dalton Eisenbath then hit a ball through the left side of the Rams defense to plate Conley.
Carolina tripled in the second frame to score Rogers and then Powers hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Carolina and account for the Lions' fifth and final run of the game.
The Rams scored all three of their runs in the bottom of the seventh inning on three hits but the Lions defense was able to hold WSSU at bay to leave with the 5-3 victory. Randy Norris hit a two-RBI double for the Rams to highlight the inning.
Mars Hill will return to action on February 17 when they play at Southern Wesleyan. The first pitch is set for 4 p.m.
