Baseball Sweeps Series Against Bluefield State
The Lions defeated Bluefield State 17-14 in baseball action on Sunday afternoon at Henderson Field
MARS HILL, N.C. – The Lions defeated Bluefield State 17-14 in baseball action on Sunday afternoon at Henderson Field to complete the three-game series sweep. Mars Hill improved to 30-18 overall while Bluefield State fell to 10-32 on the year.
Rayshelon Carolina and Evan Rogers led the Lions offensively with three hits apiece. Carolina added a triple, two RBI and a pair of stolen bases. Rogers tacked on a double and two RBI. Brett Brubaker was 2-4 with a homerun and four RBI. Dalton Eisenbath and Phillip Carrol contributed two hits and three RBI each. Kaleb McCurry obtained the win (1-0) on the mound for MHU pitching two innings in relief. Fausto Turro picked up his first save of the year pitching the ninth inning.
Crachad Laing led BSC going 3-6 with a RBI followed by Sam Harris with two hits, a double and two RBI. T.J. Sauers suffered the loss (0-1) for Bluefield State on the hill.
A sacrifice fly by Logan Conley drove in Carolina in the first inning to give MHU a 1-0 lead. A RBI single by Rogers and a two-run homerun by Bruker in the third inning extended the Lions' lead to 4-0. Once again Mars Hill plated three runs in the fourth frame highlighted by a two-RBI triple from Carolina to go up 7-0.
After the Lions scored a single run in the fifth inning to enjoy an 8-0 advantage, BSC exploded for eight runs in the top of the sixth inning to tie the contest. Bluefield State scored the eight runs on six hits and two Lion miscues. MHU answered scoring four runs in the bottom half of the inning to go up 12-8. Carroll scored two of the runs hitting a double down the right field line. Once again BSC answered the call scoring four more runs on the same number of hits and two Lion errors in the top of the seventh stanza to tie the contest at 12-all. In the bottom of the seventh inning, Mars Hill recorded five hits that plated four runs including a two-RBI single by Eisenbath to allow the Lions to take the lead for good, 16-12.
BSC managed to score two runs in the top of the eighth inning to trim the deficit to 16-14 but that was as close as they would get. Drayden Williams added an insurance run in the bottom half of the eighth inning when he crossed the plate on a wild pitch to make the final tally 17-14 in favor of the hosts.
