Rogers Highlights All-Conference Honorees
ROCK HILL, S.C. – Mars Hill senior shortstop Evan Rogers has been named the 2016 South Atlantic Conference Player of the Year while teammates Ray Carolina and Dylan Powers find themselves on the all-conference list as announced by the league office.
ROCK HILL, S.C. – Mars Hill senior shortstop Evan Rogers has been named the 2016 South Atlantic Conference Player of the Year while teammates Ray Carolina and Dylan Powers find themselves on the all-conference list as announced by the league office. Rogers, along with Carolina earned First-Team All-Conference honors and Powers was named an honorable mention following impressive seasons.
Rogers, a senior from Kernersville, N.C., put together one of the most prolific offensive seasons in Lions history. His 19 homeruns on the season set a new Mars Hill record while also ranking first in the conference. Evan was also able to lead the team and conference in runs (66) and slugging percentage (.855). A .390 batting average was tops among the Blue and Gold as well as a career-high 55 runs batted in. Rogers' most impressive game came in a 10-8 win over Wingate on February 28, belting three dingers and tallying six RBIs.
Carolina, a senior from Wiilemstad, Curacao, complimented Rogers all season long. Ray garnered a team-best 70 hits, four triples, and 25 stolen bases while his .374 batting average, 15 doubles, and 52 runs were good for second on the team. The stolen base category was also good for third in the league. Carolina led Mars Hill to a 16-10 win over Young Harris College on March 16 as he collected a career-high five hits in seven at-bats while producing four RBIs. He was able to total four hits in four different games on the season.
Powers, a senior from Botetourt, Va., carried the third-highest batting average on the team at .363. He was also second on the team and sixth within the SAC with 12 long balls, most of which were majestic shots. His 41 runs-batted-in put him second on the team while he also toted a .675 slugging percentage, second to Rogers and fifth in the league. Dylan had a pair of games where he blasted multiple homeruns, March 11 at Carson-Newman and April 16 at Tusculum.
The three seniors led Mars Hill to a 30-18 overall record, the most wins since the 2006 team collected 32 wins, while also re-writing the record books for the Lions baseball team.
