Baseball Wins Series Against Lincoln Memorial
The Lions’ baseball squad beat Lincoln Memorial 11-5 Sunday afternoon at Henderson Field to win the South Atlantic Conference three-game series against the Railsplitters
MARS HILL, N.C. – The Lions' baseball squad beat Lincoln Memorial 11-5 Sunday afternoon at Henderson Field to win the South Atlantic Conference three-game series against the Railsplitters. The teams split a double-header on Saturday. Mars Hill improved to 24-14 on the season and an even 9-9 in the league. LMU fell to 22-11 on the year, 9-6 in the SAC.
Dylan Powers led Mars Hill at the plate going 3-4 with a homerun, a double and four RBI. Christian Stampler hit what would later prove to be the game winning shot in the seventh inning, a three-run homerun over the scoreboard to left field. Logan Conley was 3-5 with a double and two RBI. Blaine Farrell picked up the win (1-0) throwing in relief. He did not allow a hit or an earned run in 3.1 innings of work.
Russell Clark led LMU going 2-4 with a run scored. Dominic Morabito suffered the loss (2-2) throwing five innings in relief for the Railsplitters. Mars Hill's pitching staff did not allow any extra base hits to LMU in the contest.
A sacrifice fly by Brett Brubaker and a double by Conley in the Lions' first at-bat gave MHU a 2-0 advantage. A sacrifice fly by Seth Hunt in the top of the second inning plated Mason Ewers to bring LMU within one run (2-1).
The Railsplitters took the lead in the fourth stanza scoring two runs on the same number of hits. A successful safety squeeze by Hunter Merrill in the sixth inning sent Phillip Carroll to the plate to tie the contest at 3-all.
LMU took a 5-3 advantage in the top of the seventh inning scoring two runs on one Lion error. Mars Hill answered scoring five runs in the bottom half of the seventh inning on four hits and one LMU miscue. After Powers drove in the Lions' fourth run on a sacrifice fly to right field, Conley tied the contest by hitting a single to send Brubaker to the plate. Stampler then blasted a three-run homer over the scoreboard behind left field fence to account for the game winning runs.
Powers hit a three run homerun to left field in the eighth inning to make the final tally 11-5 in favor of the hosts. Alec Bivins and Kaleb McCurry pitched the final 1.2 innings in relief for the Lions to help seal the win.
Mars Hill will play a three-game SAC series at Coker next weekend. The teams will play a single game on Friday, April 8, at 3 p.m. and then play a double-header at 12 p.m. on Saturday.
