MARS HILL, N.C. – The Lions swept a double-header from Bluefield State Saturday afternoon at Henderson Field. Mars Hill won the first game 15-3 and then won the nightcap, 13-0. MHU improved to 29-18overall while BSC fell to 10-31 on the year.
Prior to the first game, Mars Hill recognized their 11 senior players: Hunter Boydston, Rayshelon Carolina, Logan Conley, Phillip Carroll, Adam Daniel, Dalton Eisenbath, Tommy Ollis, Dylan Powers, Patrick Riehl, Evan Rogers and Tyler Sides.
Mars Hill accumulated 28 hits in the two wins led by Evan Rogers who went 4-5 on the day with a double and four RBI. Logan Conley was 5-7 with a homerun, a triple, a double and seven RBI. Dalton Eisenbath went 3-6 with two doubles and the same number of RBI. Brett Brubaker and Rayshelon Carolina added three hits apiece. Brubaker recorded one double while Carolina tallied one extra base hit.
Game 1: Mars Hill 15, Bluefield State 3
Rogers stole home in the first inning to put the Lions on the board (1-0). A RBI single by Chaz Rutherford in the second inning tied the contest at 1-all. Mars Hill then plated four runs on three hits in the third inning highlighted by a two-RBI single by Phillip Carroll. BSC trimmed the deficit to 4-3 in the fourth inning scoring two runs on two hits and one Lion error. Conley singled through the left side to drive in Carolina in the bottom half of the inning to give MHU a 5-3 advantage.
The Lions put the game away in the fifth frame scoring six runs on four hits highlighted by a two-RBI triple from Conley and a two-RBI single by Brubaker. The Lions added three insurance runs in the sixth stanza, Brubaker hit a two-RBI double in the at-bat.
Tom Mastrodonato obtained the win (4-3) on the mound pitching the final 3.1 innings in relief. He scattered three hits and allowed no runs while striking out three batters. Ridge Sibold suffered the loss on the mound (4-6) for BSC.
Game 2: Mars Hill 13, Bluefield State 0
Lion pitchers Tyler Sides, Zac Brown and Adam Daniel collaborated for a 13-0 shutout of Bluefield in game two. Sides picked up his third win (3-0) of the season on the mound allowing just two hits while striking out four batters. Tanner Muovich took the loss (3-6) for BSC on the mound.
A triple by Powers in the first inning drove in Rogers to give Mars Hill a 1-0 lead. MHU scored three runs in the third frame on three hits led by a two-RBI double by Brubaker to lead 4-0.
The Lions exploded for eight runs in the fifth inning on six hits and one BSC error. Rogers hit a two-RBI double in the frame and Conley belted a three-RBI homerun in the at-bat. A sacrifice fly by Rogers in the sixth inning scored Tommy Ollis to make the final tally 13-0 in favor of the hosts.
The teams will conclude the three-game series tomorrow. First pitch at Henderson Field is set for 1 p.m.
