Baseball Wins Series Against Cobras
Mars Hill swept a double-header from Coker on Saturday to win the South Atlantic Conference baseball three-game series against the Cobras
HARTSVILLE, S.C. – Mars Hill swept a double-header from Coker on Saturday to win the South Atlantic Conference baseball three-game series against the Cobras. The Lions won the first game 5-4 and then took the nightcap, 11-7. MHU improved to 26-15 overall and 11-10 in the conference. Coker fell to 24-16 on the year and an even 9-9 in the conference.
Game 1: Mars Hill 5, Coker 4
Logan Conley led Mars Hill at the plate in game one going 3-5 with a pair of doubles, two RBI and a run scored. Dylan Powers followed with two hits including a double. Evan Rogers hit his 17th homerun in the seventh inning to tie the Mars Hill school record for homeruns in a single season. He joins Matt Reed from 2004 and Brian Williams from 2009 who also hit 17 homeruns in a single season. Blaine Farrell picked up his third win on the season throwing the final 2.1 inning in relief. He allowed just two hits and no runs. Hunter Boydston threw the first 6.2 inning scattering eight hits to put the Lions in position to obtain the win.
A.J. Strnad led the Cobras offensively going 3-5 with a homerun. Jack Leech and Miguel Frias added two hits apiece. Anthony Scaccia suffered the loss throwing the final three innings in relief.
A solo homerun by Strnad in the first inning put the Cobras up 1-0. Coker then scored three runs on the same number of hits and one Lion error in the fifth frame to lead 4-0. Will Winslow hit a two-run homerun in them at-bat.
The Lions added three runs of their own in the sixth inning on three hits highlighted by a RBI double from Conley. Rogers' solo homerun in the seventh frame tied the contest and then Conley notched the game winner with another double in the ninth inning that sent Powers to the plate for the game winning run. Powers hit a two-out double to keep the Lions' at-bat alive.
Game 2: Mars Hill 11, Coker 7
Dalton Eisenbath led the Lions at the plate in game two going a perfect 4-4 with a homerun, a double and two RBI. Rashelon Carolina, Brett Brubaker, Rogers and Phillips Carroll tallied two hits apiece in the win. Carroll and Carolina recorded doubles in the victory. Drayden Williams picked up his sixth win (6-2) on the season pitching three innings in relief. Williams allowed only one run scored. Kaleb McCurry obtained his second save on the year recording the final two outs of the contest.
Winslow led Coker at the plate going 2-4 with four RBI. Darius Coldiron took the loss (4-2) for the Cobras.
After the teams traded single runs in the first inning, Mars Hill exploded for five runs in the top of the second inning on five hits highlighted by a two-RBI single from Christian Stampler to lead 6-1.
The Cobras scored two runs in both the second and third innings to trim the deficit to 6-5. Eisenbath's solo homerun to left-center field put MHU up 7-5. The Lions added two runs in the top of the sixth and the top of the seventh innings to lead 11-5. Coker scored two runs in the bottom half of the seventh inning but that was as closed as they would get before McCurry sealed the win for the Lions.
Mars Hill will host North Greenville on Tuesday, April 12. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
