Lions extend win streak to three, down GCSU in four

MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill volleyball team (8-8) defeated Georgia College & State University (7-12) in four sets (25-18, 25-19, 18-25, 25-16) Monday night in non-conference play.
The Lions held GCSU to a negative hitting percentage in sets one and four. Mars Hill recorded a match-high 15 kills in the first frame, hitting .135 in the set.
Mars Hill continued their strong defensive prowess in the second, holding the Bobcats to a .000 hitting percentage while hitting a team-high .148, entering the third up two sets.
Georgia College and State University responded well in the third, hitting a match-high .270 and forcing the Lions to commit nine errors on 47 swings.
While both teams recorded 10 kills in the fourth set, it was the Lions who pushed their way past, ending the match with a kill off the hand of Jada Cannon. They forced a match-high 12 errors, seeing the Bobcats hit a -.041 to end the match.
Ioana Poenaru led all players with 12 kills and added 16 digs for the double-double. Skylar Ogden added nine while Cannon closed out the match on her eighth kill. The reigning, defending SAC WePlayed Sports Defensive Player of the Week, Laela Jimenez, led all players with 23 digs.
Nikkayla Stewart led all players with five blocks, adding seven kills. Alyssa Kornegay led all players with 21 assists.
The Lions return to action on Friday, October 25 when they host Catawba inside Chambers Gymnasium. First serve is set for 6 p.m.
