HICKORY, N.C. - The Mars Hill volleyball team (4-5, 2-1 SAC) was swept by Lenoir-Rhyne (11-0, 2-0 SAC) and downed in five by UNC Pembroke (3-6) Saturday afternoon on the road.
MATCH 1: L-R 3, MHU 0
Despite close sets in the first and second, Lenoir-Rhyne hit a match-high .333 in the third, holding the Lions to just 11 points to complete the sweep. The Bears were able to hold off a pressing Lions' squad late in the first, taking advantage of MHU attack errors.
In the second, the Lions led 23-22 late before a series of errors allowed the Bears to recover and steal the second stanza, heading into the third with the 2-0 advantage.
Multiple three-plus point runs by L-R in the third secured the sweep.
Katilyn Grant led Mars Hill with 11 kills followed by four apiece from Timmons Yates and Brooke Hoffman. Laela Jimenez led all players with 23 digs.
MATCH 2: UNCP 3, MHU 2
Despite Mars Hill taking sets two and three, UNC Pembroke battled in the fourth, forcing a fifth set that saw the squad take their third match of the year.
The Braves recorded a match-high 19 kills in the fourth set en route to forcing the deciding frame. In the fifth, the team hit a match-high .400 with nine kills on 20 swings. Abby Peduzzi led all players with 22 kills while both Ruby Countryman and Mckenna Hayes added 17 apiece.
After dropping the first set, 26-24, Mars Hill responded by taking the next two by scores of 25-23 and 26-24.
Skylar Ogden recorded a season-high 11 kills in the match followed by 10 from Katilyn Grant. Grant led all players with six blocks while Alyssa Kornegay led the team with 25 assists. Laela Jimenez led all players with 26 digs.
Mars Hill takes to the road on Tuesday, September 24 when they face Tusculum. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
