MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill volleyball team (4-7, 2-3 SAC) fell to Carson-Newman (11-3, 7-0 SAC) in straight sets Monday night inside Chambers Gymnasium.
The Eagles took the first set, running off of a 5-0 run to open the frame. A resilient Lions' team battled late in the set, but the large deficit proved too much in the latter stages.
Carson-Newman followed up their first with a match-high .222 hitting percentage in the second set, going up 2-0 by a score of 25-18.
Mars Hill led late in the third before Carson-Newman rallied to force extra volleyball. The team hit .214 and posted a match-high 17 kills to complete the sweep.
Despite dropping the third, the Lions knocked down 14 kills and hit .205 in the set, both team highs on the night.
Jada Cannon led the team with eight kills and 11 digs while Ioana Poenaru added seven kills. Katilyn Grant recorded six kills and led all players with five blocks.
Mars Hill returns to action on Friday, October 11 when they host Emory & Henry. First serve is set for 6 p.m. inside Chambers Gymnasium.
