Lions split season-opening matches at Ram Rumble
Mars Hill ends night one of Ram Rumble with sweep over Glenville State.
SHEPHERDSTOWN, W. Va. - The Mars Hill volleyball team (1-1) opened their 2024 season on the road at the Ram Rumble, falling to Shepherd (3-0) by a score of 3-1, but defeating Glenville State (0-2) in straight sets.
MATCH 1: SU 3, MHU 1
Joi Fairweather led the Rams with 15 kills in the contest, hitting .371 in the match. Amya Davis added 14 kills while Jordan Pryor knocked down 12 while adding 12 digs for the double-double.
Ioana Poenaru led the Lions with nine kills, followed by eight from Jada Cannon. Laela Jimenez led all players with 17 digs.
Shepherd outhit Mars Hill .256 to .097 and recorded 14 blocks in the match.
MATCH 2: MHU 3, GSU 0
Mars Hill responded in their second match of the day, picking up their first win of the season by sweeping Glenville State.
A balanced attack saw Katilyn Grant lead the Lions with seven kills while the trio of Jada Cannon, Timmons Yates and Skylar Ogden added five apiece, followed by four each from Ioana Poenaru and Brooke Hoffman.
Yates led all players, hitting .625 on the night. MacKenzie Schmucker led all players with 15 assists while Laela Jimenez once again led all players with 17 digs.
The Lions conclude the Ram Rumble tournament on Saturday, September 7 when they face Edinboro and Bowie State. Mars Hill's first serve with the Fighting Scots is set for 11 a.m.
