Plougmand ties MHU record again in 7-2 rout of Newberry

NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Mars Hill men's soccer team (3-0-1, 1-0 SAC) routed Newberry (0-3-0, 0-1 SAC) by a score of 7-2 Saturday afternoon in their South Atlantic Conference opener.

Peter Plougmand tied the Mars Hill record for the second time in his career, netting four goals. He opened the scoring in the seventh minute, scoring his fourth of the season off a pass from Sam Bayly. Less than 10 minutes later, he put the Lions up by two with the assist credited to Adrian Faus.

Three minutes after Plougmand's second tally, Henok Awoke cut the Lions' lead in half in the 19th minute. 

Mars Hill responded in the 31st minute, rebuilding the two-goal lead as Plougmand completed the hat-trick with the assist coming from Nicholas Graves. With 2:33 remaining in the half, Plougmand drew a penalty and converted the opportunity, securing his second career four-goal game.

The Lions netted three more goals in the final 45 minutes. Frederik Marten scored his first as a Lion in the 60th minute while Bayly collected his second assist of the contest. In the 74th minute, Carrick Bromage netted his first of the year and 2:30 later in the game, Faus scored his first of the season.

Mars Hill outshot Newberry 22-6 with Plougmand's seven attempts leading all players. He was followed by Faus' four. Plougmand ended the day with eight points while Faus collected three.

James Price picked up his third win of the season, playing over 70 minutes. Logan Cassel came in with under 20 minutes to play, making his first save of the season.

Mars Hill returns to action on Wednesday, September 18 when they take on Southern Wesleyan. Kickoff inside the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium is set for 7:30 p.m.
