SALISBURY, N.C. - The Mars Hill men's soccer team (8-2-2, 5-2-1 SAC) earned a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Catawba (5-4-5, 3-3-3 SAC) Saturday night on the road.
Mars Hill struck first in the 14th minute with a goal from Peter Plougmand, giving the Lions an early 1-0 advantage. Despite several close attempts from Catawba, Mars Hill's defense, led by goalkeeper Logan Cassel, held firm with Cassel making multiple key saves in the first half.
Catawba equalized in the 53rd minute with a penalty kick by Joe Bennett, but Mars Hill responded just two minutes later as Plougmand netted his second goal of the match, assisted by Bruno Fornes, to restore the lead. Plougmand's 18th of the season was his fourth game-winning goal of the year.
Catawba pressed hard in the final minutes, but Mars Hill's defense stood strong, securing the 2-1 victory. Plougmand's brace and Cassel's three saves were pivotal in the win.
Mars Hill will look to continue their strong season as they return to action on Friday, November 1 against Coker at home inside Meares Stadium at 7:30 p.m.
