MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill men's soccer team (9-2-4, 6-2-3 SAC) earned a 2-2 draw with No. 8 Limestone (11-1-3, 9-1-1 SAC) Wednesday evening in their regular season finale.
The draw secured the Lions a point in the standings. Anderson's 3-0 win over Newberry propelled the Trojans to third in the league while the Lions dropped to fourth. Mars Hill will host a South Atlantic Conference Quarterfinal game for the first time in over a decade when they face No. 5 Lincoln Memorial. A date and time has not yet been confirmed.
Tied at one with just over 10 minutes to play, Limestone's Mark Radoki put the Saints up 2-1, placing home the loose ball in the box. Under seven minutes later, a deep strike by Logan Cassel rattled around within the Limestone box before bouncing out to Jordan Alexander.
Alexander, on the volley, blasted a shot with the right foot, just under the crossbar and off of a Saints' defender to score his first career goal and tie the game at two.
Several chances down the stretch by Limestone were turned away by Cassel and his defensive corps, led by Ben Harvey and Cam Watts.
Mars Hill opened the scoring in the third minute as Braxton Robinson was hauled down inside the box, awarding the Lions with a penalty kick. Adrian Faus took the attempt and buried his sixth of the season.
In the third 32nd minute, Tomas Echevarria banked a cross off of a Lions' defender past Cassel to tie the game at one.
Mars Hill was outshot 24-4, but remained resilient, capitalizing on their opportunities. Faus, Alexander, Henry Jolland, and Leonardo Sanches took the four attempts for Mars Hill.
Nikolaj Bertelsen made one save in the draw while Cassel made six stops.
Mars Hill, the No. 4 team in the upcoming SAC Tournament, hosts the No. 5 Railsplitters of Lincoln Memorial this weekend inside Meares Stadium.
