Mars Hill defeats UNG for first win of season
The Mars Hill baseball team (1-2) defeated North Georgia (2-1) by a score of 14-7 Sunday afternoon in the series finale.
DAHLONEGA, Ga. - The Mars Hill baseball team (1-2) defeated North Georgia (2-1) by a score of 14-7 Sunday afternoon in the series finale.
The Lions trailed 5-2 entering the sixth inning before plating two to cut the lead down to one. Tai Gilbert's single, followed by a Nighthawk error, plated Alex Naran. Later in the frame, a North George wild pitch allowed Gilbert to score.
In the top of the eighth, the Lions plated four to take the lead. Elec Yount opened the scoring with a two-run single to right field, scoring Toby Troutman and Chad Sikes. Naran and Gilbert each added RBI singles to go up 8-5 heading to the bottom of the frame.
Up by two entering the final stanza, Mars Hill scored six runs to extend their lead and cement the victory. Gilbert picked up his fifth RBI of the contest with a grand slam.
Gilbert led all players with three hits, three runs, and five RBI. Naran also posted three hits along with two RBI. Troutman scored three runs and his lone hit was a solo home run in the top of the fifth.
Brennan Williams allowed three runs on three hits in 3.0 innings thrown in the start. Nate Crissey, in relief work, was credited with the win, allowing just one hit while striking out one in 1.0 innings pitched.
The Lions return to the diamond on Saturday, February 10 when they kick off a three-game series with Lee. Game one of Saturday's doubleheader is set for a 1 p.m. first pitch with game two set for a 4 p.m. start.
