Mars Hill opens series with 5-4 win over UVA Wise
The Mars Hill baseball team (4-8, 1-3 SAC) defeated UVA Wise (3-11, 0-1 SAC) by a score of 5-4 Friday afternoon to win their first South Atlantic Conference game of the year.
MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill baseball team (4-8, 1-3 SAC) defeated UVA Wise (3-11, 0-1 SAC) by a score of 5-4 Friday afternoon to win their first South Atlantic Conference game of the year.
The Lions trailed 2-0 after two innings, but plated three in the third to take their first and only lead of the contest. Alex Naran opened the scoring with a RBI double that scored Elec Yount. After a Carter Potts' RBI groundout tied the game at two, Naran scored off of a Cavaliers' error.
Following scoreless fourth and fifth innings, Toby Troutman extended the Lions' lead to two with a RBI double to right center, scoring Jaden James. UVA Wise responded in the top of the seventh, pulling within one once more as DJ Dickson plated Jake Weaver with a single through the right side.
Another Cavaliers' error in the bottom of the eighth allowed Troutman to score the eventual game-winning run. In a late comeback effort, Justin Reed's RBI single plated Nick Badgett to pull within one in the top of the ninth.
Naran led the Lions with two hits on the day. Yount, Naran, Potts, and Troutman each posted one RBI apiece.
Grady Bivens threw seven innings, allowing two earned runs on four hits while striking out five for his first win of the season. Jake Wagoner picked up the save, allowing one run on four hits in two innings.
The Lions continue the series on Saturday, February 24. First pitch at Henderson Field is set for 11 a.m.
