
Lions complete series sweep of Cavaliers
The Mars Hill baseball team (6-8, 3-3 SAC) defeated UVA Wise (3-13, 0-3 SAC) in both games Saturday, taking game one by a score of 12-2 in seven innings, and closing out the weekend series with a dramatic 7-6 win.

MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill baseball team (6-8, 3-3 SAC) defeated UVA Wise (3-13, 0-3 SAC) in both games Saturday, taking game one by a score of 12-2 in seven innings, and closing out the weekend series with a dramatic 7-6 win.
GAME ONE: MHU 12, UVAW 2 (7 Innings)
Mars Hill scored 11 runs over the sixth and seventh innings to take game two of the series by a score of 12-2.
Trailing 2-1 entering the sixth and with the bases loaded, Chad Sikes was hit by an errant pitch, plating Carter Potts for the tying run. After Trey Putnam drew a walk to plate Luke Hayes for the go-ahead run, Elec Yount cleared the bases with a double up the right field line.
In the bottom of the seventh, Toby Troutman and Paul Martin drew back-to-back bases loaded walks. Once again, Yount cleared the bases with a double, this time to left center field. Closing out the 10-run win was Zach Weaver, who plated Yount with a single to center.
The trio of Yount, Potts, and Hayes led all players with two hits while Yount recorded six RBI in game one. Brennan Williams earned his first win of the season, throwing 4.0 innings, allowing two runs on four hits while striking out six. Dearl Edens struck out three in 3.0 innings, allowing just one hit for the save.
GAME TWO: MHU 7, UVAW 6
Elec Yount's three-run home run in the bottom of the sixth pushed the Lions past UVA Wise in game three, completing the sweep.
Mars Hill jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first inning. With the bases loaded, Alex Naran drew a walk to score Trey Putnam for the first run of the game. Carter Potts plated Yount with a RBI groundout to third and capping off the scoring was Jaden James' sacrifice fly, allowing Zach Weaver to score.
The Cavaliers cut into the lead in the second, scoring two runs, but Potts, in the bottom of the third, put the Lions back up by two with another RBI groundout, plating Yount.
In the fourth, the Cavaliers plated three to take the lead, highlighted by Morgan Miller's solo home run. UVA Wise tacked on another run in the top of the sixth as DJ Dickson drew a bases loaded walk.
Yount went 3-for-3 with three RBI, both game highs. He finished a triple shy of the cycle and ended the day with nine RBI. Potts added two RBI.
Jake Wagoner, in 2.0 innings of relief work, picked up his first win of the season.
Mars Hill returns to the diamond on Tuesday, February 27, facing Young Harris at 2 p.m. at Henderson Field in non-conference play.
