
Lions score season-high 19 in win over SWU
The Mars Hill baseball team (9-14) defeated Southern Wesleyan (5-18) by a score of 19-9 Tuesday evening on the road.
CENTRAL, S.C. - The Mars Hill baseball team (9-14) defeated Southern Wesleyan (5-18) by a score of 19-9 Tuesday evening on the road.
The Lions used a seven-run seventh inning en route to the non-conference win. A pair of bases loaded walks were drawn by Trey Putnam and Chad Sikes. Sandwiched between was a RBI single off the bat of Preston Holcomb.
Later in the frame, a pair of Warriors' wild pitches allowed Putnam and Sikes to score. Elec Yount and Alex Naran capped off the scoring with RBI groundouts. In the top fo the eighth, Yount recorded his second RBI of the contest with a single to center, plating Davis Anders. Carter Potts' infield single plated Sikes for the Lions' 16th run of the game.
In the top of the ninth, Mars Hill added three runs, two more off of Southern Wesleyan wild pitches.
Naran opened the scoring in the top of the first with a RBI single up the middle. In the bottom of the frame, the Warriors tied the game with a single off the bat of Tyler Jackson.
After plating two runs in the third, the Lions scored three in the fourth, highlighted by Naran's two-run single through the right side of the infield, plating Yount and Zach Weaver.
Mars Hill scored 19 runs on 13 hits, also taking advantage of six Warriors' errors. Potts led all players with three hits, adding two RBI. Naran led the Lions with three RBI. Weaver, Yount, Naran, Holcomb, and Sikes each added two hits apiece.
Landen Moore got the start for the Lions, allowing one run on three hits in 2.0 innings. Dustin Dunlap was credited with the win, throwing one scoreless inning.
The Lions return home on Friday, March 15 when they face St. Michael's. First pitch at Henderson Field is set for 2 p.m.
