BELMONT, N.C. - The Mars Hill baseball team (2-5) was defeated by Belmont Abbey (3-3) by a score of 9-2 Tuesday afternoon on the road.
The Crusaders plated three in the top of the first off of a trio of doubles. In the second, a solo home run off the batt of Caleb Burr put them up by four.
Elec Yount's RBI single in the top of the third broke the shutout bid. Trailing 5-1 entering the fifth, Zach Weaver's sacrifice fly plated Trey Putnam for the second time on the day.
Belmont Abbey tacked on four runs from the fifth inning on with three being scored in the seventh.
Joe Whitaker led all players with three hits and two runs while Jaden James led the Lions with two hits.
Mars Hill opens home and South Atlantic Conference play on Friday, February 16 when they host Lincoln Memorial at Henderson Field. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
