The Mars Hill baseball team (10-16) split their Saturday doubleheader versus Saint Michael's (3-10), dropping game one by a score of 2-1, but rallying in game two, taking the contest by an 8-3 mark.
MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill baseball team (10-16) split their Saturday doubleheader versus Saint Michael's (3-10), dropping game one by a score of 2-1, but rallying in game two, taking the contest by an 8-3 mark.
GAME ONE: SMC 2, MHU 1
In a low scoring affair, the Purple Knights, with one swing of the bat, claimed the game one victory to clinch the series win.
In the top of the second, Terence Moynihan hit a two-run home run to give Saint Michael's the lead. Mars Hill responded in the fifth with a Zach Weaver single that plated Trey Putnam.
Saint Michael's was held to three hits on the afternoon while the Lions racked up five. Putnam led all players with two.
Jared Duquette threw 5.2 innings, allowing one run on four hits. Keegan Burke garnered the save with 1.1 scoreless innings.
GAME TWO: MHU 8, SMC 3
The Lions scored eight unanswered runs to split Saturday's doubleheader.
Trailing 3-0 entering the bottom of the third, Toby Troutman blasted his first of two home runs in the contest. Paul Martin tied the game at three in the bottom of the fourth with a two-run double that plated Carter Potts and Elec Yount.
A four-run fifth pulled the Lions away en route to the victory. Troutman smashed a two-run home run while Martin collected his third RBI of the contest with a RBI double that plated Zach Weaver.
Luke Hayes picked up his second RBI in the bottom of the sixth with a sacrifice fly that scored Trey Putnam.
Saint Michael's opened the scoring in the first with a RBI single off the bat of Evan Balian. In the top of the third, Balian extended the lead to three with a two-run home run.
Martin, Putnam, and Troutman led the team with two hits apiece while Troutman and Balian led all players with three RBI.
Peyton Kowalski earned his first win of the season, throwing 3.2 scoreless innings, allowing three hits while striking out three.
The Lions return to the diamond on Tuesday, March 19 when they host Belmont Abbey. First pitch at Henderson Field is set for 2 p.m.
