
Mars Hill defeats Warriors in high-scoring affair
The Mars Hill baseball team (15-27) defeated Southern Wesleyan (6-38) by a score of 15-10 Tuesday afternoon inside Henderson Field.
MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill baseball team (15-27) defeated Southern Wesleyan (6-38) by a score of 15-10 Tuesday afternoon inside Henderson Field.
The Lions jumped out to a 6-0 lead after one with five players recording RBI singles. Elec Yount drove home two while Jaden James, Trey Putnam, Chad Sikes, and Alex Naran each plated one apiece.
Sikes picked up his second and third RBI of the game in the second with a two-run double, extending the Lions' lead to eight.
The Warriors chipped into the Mars Hill lead, scoring three in the top of the third, but a two-run single from Putnam put the Lions back up by seven.
Southern Wesleyan made a push in the fifth and sixth innings, clawing within three as Grisso hit two home runs in that span; a solo shot in the fifth and a three-run shot in the sixth.
Mars Hill tacked on three more runs in the seventh, highlighted by Tai Gilbert's two-run single. Chris Bleeker built the Lions' lead back to seven with a solo home run in the bottom of the eighth.
Putnam and Sikes led the Lions with three hits and three RBI. Naran, James, and Gilbert each recorded two hits apiece.
Donald Gorgei was credited with the win, throwing 2.1 innings, allowing one run on one hit while striking out five.
Mars Hill returns to the diamond on Friday, April 19 when they face Emory & Henry. First pitch on the road is set for 3 p.m.
